Senior Mechanical Engineer

Mechanical Engineer (PE) – Chicago, IL

A leading engineering firm is seeking a licensed Mechanical Engineer to join their downtown Chicago office.

About the Role

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated with expertise in HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection design for building systems. This role requires autonomy in design, project management, and oversight of junior engineers and technicians.

The firm’s MEP team works on a diverse range of projects, including transit, aviation, higher education, healthcare, municipal buildings, office spaces, parking garages, and more.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design for building systems: HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection
  • Supervise development of contract documents (cost estimates, specifications, equipment schedules, etc.) in line with client standards
  • Conduct site visits and attend client meetings
  • Organize project documentation (both physical and digital)
  • Coordinate with engineers, technicians, and management
  • Participate in QA/QC processes to ensure high-quality work
  • Prioritize tasks and manage workloads based on project needs
  • Oversee project scoping, budgeting, and scheduling
  • Assist with proposals and business development efforts

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (M.S. preferred)
  • 10+ years of experience in mechanical engineering
  • Illinois PE license required
  • Proficiency in ASHRAE standards
  • Experience with HVAC calculation software
  • Understanding of AutoCAD and REVIT drafting solutions
  • Strong presentation, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and strict attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
